Can’t get to us but want access to our fantastic collections and amazing learning activities? Let one of our learning team visit you to inspire, amaze and educate. We offer a range of great classroom-based sessions incorporating special objects and fun activities which bring history alive.

Our team cater to all ages and abilities.

We offer two types of museums outreach:

Classroom

Take part in interactive activities, immersive storytelling and dressing up. This session is designed for individual classes. For up to 35 children.

Assembly

An assembly-style session using props, stories, volunteers from the audience and our amazing objects from our collection. For up to 90 children.

Pyramids

Ancient Egyptians

Take part in the weighing-of-the-heart ceremony, find out how the Egyptians mummified their dead and have a look at some of the objects from the museum’s collection. This session is designed to be led in an assembly-style and is great as an introduction to the topic! Assembly only.
Stonehenge 

Prehistory

Find out about the people who called Southampton home thousands of years ago! Handle objects, dress as a cave man and discover why people threw brand new swords away!
Roman ruins

The Romans

Visit Clausentum, Roman Southampton, in this immersive session including genuine artefacts, some dressing up and fun hands-on activities!

Medicine Women

Get interactive with the sights and smells of medicine through time and answer questions like: how do you keep infection at bay in a muddy field and what was so bad about health and hygiene before?

Mary Anning

Enter the world of dinosaur discovery in this interactive workshop looking at the life of Mary Anning, and the incredible discoveries she made along the way. This sessions includes real fossil object-handling!

Step aboard the RMS Titanic to take part of lots of fascinating activities related to the most famous ship of all time.
Selection of coats

Second World War

An immersive session looking at the Second World War in a sensitive way. Handle real objects from the time, dress as an ARP Warden and imagine what life would have been like for an evacuee.
Toys collage

Toys Through Time

A whistle-stop tour through the toys children played with in the past. Try our toy timeline, master quoits and have a go at blind drawing our mystery toys! Classroom only.
Great fire of london

Great Fire of London

Join us for an incredible hands-on session discovering the story of the Great Fire of London. Take part in a selection of fun interactive activities including our ‘Great Fire Finds Dig’, sights and smells game and a chance to meet the person responsible for the fire! Classroom only.
